One of the most intriguing accounts in the Bible to me, is that of the nation of Israel being rescued from slavery and led through the wilderness by God Himself! Can you imagine?! The miracles, the signs, the wonders, the payback, the daring adventure ahead, and a wonderful new beginning!
God Himself heard their cries for help, and God Himself brought them out of mistreatment in miraculous form! No one could deny that it was God’s doing, and that these were God’s people. He had loved them too much to leave them there, under the harsh rule of the Egyptians. Surely they had to know now, that nothing could stop them, as long as Yahweh was with them!
And they head out into the great unknown… following God, with strong faith and high hopes for the future….
UNTIL things don’t go the way they thought it would…
Does this sound familiar to anyone else?? Or just me?…
It’s so easy to trust God when things are going well! When we’re getting what we’ve been praying for. When God is moving on our behalf…
But what about when things stop going well? When we don’t see God moving? When it seems like He ain’t nowhere to be found anymore?!
The nation of Israel had the honor of being God’s chosen people. They got to experience and witness miracles. So what was holding Israel back? Why were they not able to keep trusting God? Why did their fear always seem to outweigh their faith??…. And what can we learn from them about what is holding us back today?
In Hebrews 12:1, it mentions “weights” and “sin” as two things that ensnare believers and keep them from running the race set before them. Philippians 3:13 says that a person’s past (“what is behind”) must be forgotten in order to reach forward to what is ahead. Again in Isaiah 43:18, God mentions the past and says not to remember or dwell on it…
So in those verses we can see three specific things that can hold us back as believers, and that I believe held the Israelites back as well; because the enemy doesn’t come up with anything new. He uses the same tricks and traps now as he did way back then.
Those three things are:
1) Weights- Anything that weighs us down (may or may not be sin), a major one is the need to be self sufficient, and the fear of trusting or being out of control
2) Sin- Anything that causes us to disobey the commandments of God
3) The past- What we’ve always known, what we are familiar with, which will cause us to put limits on what God wants to do in our present and in our future
If we continue on in Isaiah 43 to verse 19, God tells His people: “Hey look! I’m about to do something brand new! It’s on the way right now! Are you looking for it? Are you expecting? I’m about to make a way in the wilderness and make rivers in the desert.” In other words, He is saying He’s about to do IMPOSSIBLE things! And things that will be nothing like what they have ever experienced or known before.
So what held Israel back? Why couldn’t they experience everything God had for them? And why did they see the amazing things that they DID see, and STILL lack faith every time God tried to take them further??
AND why do so many of us still experience this today?…
I truly believe it is because of all three of the issues that I emphasized earlier, but especially the issue of the past.
The nation of Israel was being brought out of hundreds of years of living in slavery. They had been mistreated, abused, and held captive. This was a life that they absolutely hated! But it was also the life that they had always known. Those who had once lived as free people were now long gone, and those who remained knew nothing other than slavery and turmoil. They were miserable, and they begged and pleaded with God to rescue them!
And He did! He brought them out into a new way, new places, a new life. And ya know what they did once they got there??… They were terrified and they begged God to take them back to Egypt! Back to their slavery!
Can you believe it?!
But dare I say that we are all guilty of this type of behavior, if we really stopped to think about it. We can complain about things in our lives. We can get down on our knees and beg God to help us! BUT are we willing to step out into the unknown and the uncertain of something new and different??
Yes, Israel may have been abused slaves in Egypt. But at least they knew what to expect. At least they knew where their next meal was coming from, as small and meager as it may have been. At least they knew their place and what was expected of them. Though that place was under the foot of abusive masters.
When they were led by God out into the unknowns of the wilderness, they no longer knew what to expect. No longer knew for sure where that next meal was coming from. They no longer even knew who they were as a people!… Despite the fact that God Himself was using His servant Moses to communicate with them and reassure them. Despite the fact that God Himself had already performed miracles and shown them His power. Despite the fact that God Himself had given them identity as His people!
They were still stuck in old mindsets, in a slave mentality, in the PAST.
May we take stock of ourselves as believers today. Of whether we are allowing anything to hold us back from the new things that God is desiring to do in our lives. May we let go of any weight, any fear, any sin, anything from our pasts… that may be keeping us stuck in outdated mindsets and mentalities!
I pray that all reading will trust God as He leads you into the new things He has for you, full of faith and empty of fear. <3
