In chapter one of Genesis, we see the creation of the world, of plants and animals, and of humans. More detail is given in chapter two about how man was created first and then woman.
Now, there’s a lot to unpack there, of course. So I’m just going to hit on some highlights that stuck out to me as I meditated on these chapters.
At the end of chapter one, God gave mankind dominion over the earth and over every animal, as well as every plant and tree as food. This was the first time that the thought hit me that animals were not originally created to be eaten. God gave mankind the earth and the animals in it, and then he gave plants and trees to both the humans and animals as food. It wasn’t until after the flood that we see God tell Noah in Genesis 9, that the animals would now have a fear of man, and that man would now use both plants and animals as food.
Perhaps the animals were originally meant to simply be companions to the humans, as we know that God emphasizes the importance of fellowship throughout the Bible. God brings all the animals to Adam and allows him to name them. I can imagine that naming each animal one by one was quite an experience for Adam. It feels to me that something personal was being birthed here between the man and the animals. A sense of familiarity and companionship perhaps. Any pet owner or animal lover knows that there’s something special that can exist between a human and an animal….
In Gen. 2:18, God says, “It’s not good for the man to be alone…”; however, there was no true companion for Adam found amongst the animals. So the first woman is created from the rib of Adam, taken by God in the world’s first “surgery.” This woman, whom Adam named Eve, is referred to as his complement and helper.
There had been no other creature found to be on the same level as Adam. Interestingly, with everything that God created at the beginning of time, we see Him speak each thing into existence…. except for these two beings: man and woman. They were specially crafted by the very hands of God…
I think of these two creations…. Adam, created from the dust of the earth, the hands of God forming order from chaos, an image from dirt…. and then breathing His breath into the body He had created…. The first man.
Then came Eve…. creation itself was not complete until woman was created, once again by the very hands of God. Woman was made from the bone of man, specifically a rib…. the bone made to protect the vital organs of the heart and lungs from outside harm. Woman was described as a helper, a complement to the man (Gen. 2:18) …. i.e., a counter-part or supplement. Part of the man, and yet separate and unique… and apparently, vital.
Now things were right in the world. For a little while at least…. Adam at last has his Eve. They bonded to one another, becoming one flesh. They were both naked, and yet they felt no shame (Gen 2:24-25).
What a beautiful image of marriage as it was designed to be: naked and unashamed. To me, their nakedness represents vulnerability…. Because what other relationship in this world requires the same level of vulnerability as does marriage?
Yes, a child is vulnerable before their caregiver. But the caregiver does not have to offer the same level of vulnerability. They can often hide their most intimate struggles from the little ones that they have to be strong for.
Yes, an intimate relationship that does not involve marriage can also require vulnerability from both sides. But there is still the knowledge in the back of each person’s mind, that they could so easily walk away… their lives have not become as intertwined as they would be in a marriage commitment; it would be quite easy for them to untangle themselves and go their separate ways, no harm done….
But MAN, a marriage!….. Now that’s a whole ‘nother level! Such commitment, such vulnerability. No one else will ever be able to see your beauty, but then also all of your ugliness, so up close and so brutally clear. You see their beauty and all the things that make them a good partner, and you make that marriage commitment, and then you go home together… And that’s when everything is stripped down, in more ways than one…
In making that commitment and living together, and intertwining so closely until two become one, marriage will bring out the best, and then also the very worst of both parties. And when you see that worst in your partner, you’ll want to grab everything you own and run for the hills! You’ll say to yourself, “No way!… This is not what I signed up for!”
And they’ll say that about you too. I promise!…. If spouses let themselves become vulnerable and real with each other in the slightest, things will get uncomfortable and they’ll get very ugly at times….
But that’s because marriage forces a person to become completely “naked” with another. And the other person to become “naked” with them as well. What a true emotional and spiritual commitment between a man and a woman does, is create the safe place for this vulnerability to happen.
A place where a woman will look across at your husband, as he takes off all the masks and personas he hides behind; as he lays aside his toughness and all his joking…. And he allows his wife to look upon the parts of himself that he’s not proud of whatsoever….
And marriage is the same place where the husband gazes back at his wife, as she removes all the flattering clothing and the makeup, and lets down her guards; where she must lay aside pretenses and no longer pretend she has all the answers….. A place where she can expose her deepest and her darkest, despite fear of her husband’s reaction…
This is the place where that commitment made between the two should be the stabilizing force. Where they can lock eyes, choosing to look away from the ugly parts of the other, and focus instead on the beauty. Saying to one another by their very presence, that everything is going to be ok.
Saying that the ugly does exist, and sometimes it really hurts…. BUT they’re still not going anywhere! Their marriage is where they can be completely naked, completely vulnerable…. and yet still completely unashamed.
And THAT is such a beautiful thing! God’s beautiful creation of marriage…
And knowing that, really changes things. <3
