After I reestablished my relationship with God in 2020, I began re-reading the Bible. I had read the Bible all the way through more than once prior to this, and some parts I had read multiple times over. So when I decided to begin again and felt the desire to dig deeper than I ever had before, I went online to search for new reading plan ideas.
I ended up deciding on a chronological plan, which lays out the readings in the order that the events actually occurred in time. It started me off in Genesis, as expected; but halfway through Genesis, it took me over to Job, and then back to Genesis, and so forth….
My progress has been very slow this go-round, compared to my Bible reading in the past. I’ve been taking time to really dig into anything that I don’t quite understand. I finished Genesis and Job, and I am now almost through Exodus.
The things that I have seen and felt in my reading times since beginning this plan, have been indescribable! And I think I’m now ready to start the journey of sharing my thoughts.
I guess there’s no better place to start than “in the beginning,” with good ole Genesis chapter one….. that well-known, and well-debated story of creation.
As I read over that chapter once again, this time searching with new eyes, praying for understanding and revelation…. the main thing that stuck out to me was that my God is a creative God. The Bible starts out with a bang; no introduction, no easing into it… just straight to Godly craft time! Genesis chapter one, verse one: “God created….”
I don’t claim to understand or comprehend at all what was there before this “beginning” in Genesis 1:1. God was there obviously, and the heavens and the earth were created by Him (heavens as in sky, atmosphere, galaxies, etc.). But the earth was “formless” and “empty.” It was covered by water and darkness (vs. 2). I think of emptiness, darkness, and lack of order; and the term “chaos” comes to my mind: a lack of order resulting in confusion….
In this first chapter of Genesis, God uses one thing to create with, and interestingly, it’s not His hands …. We will see in chapter two, that He gets His hands dirty (pun intended haha) when he forms man from dust, and then woman from the man’s rib, and places them in the garden. But all of the many things created in chapter one are created by God’s voice alone. He SPEAKS each thing into existence.
In verse 3, “God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” God then looked at the light and acknowledged that it was good (vs. 4). We see this pattern continue throughout the entire chapter. God spoke… and it was… and it was good; He spoke, it became, it was good; and so forth….
The words of God had (and still have) creative power within them. He used His words as the tools that shaped our entire world and everything within and around it. Now, believing in an all-powerful God, could He not have created the world in any way that He wanted? Couldn’t He have just thought it, and it would have appeared? Could He not have just pointed His finger, and poof!?….
Why did God choose to create with His words? I believe that everything God did and then chose to describe in the Bible for us, was put there for a reason. He is telling us something, with every word, every line. He so often chose to describe His own actions or feelings within the Bible using human terms; so that we could possibly, even just somewhat, comprehend with our limited minds, the ways of our limitless God.
I think the intended message here in Genesis chapter one, is the truth of just how powerful our words are! In Proverbs 18:21, the Bible says that “life and death are in the POWER of the tongue.” Think about that! Your tongue and every word you speak with it, have the power to create life, or to create death… and that means for yourself, and for those who hear you.
We are the only creatures made in the image of God Himself (Genesis 1:27). And reading the above verse in Proverbs, it’s obvious to me that part of His image that we are given is the creative power of words. Just as He demonstrated when He spoke the heavens and the earth into existence, our words too have power. They can create hope and love and peace; and with even less effort unfortunately, our words can create chaos and pain and hatred…. within and around us….
What words are you using as tools? To shape the environment within and around you…. Are you taking responsibility for and ownership of the power within your words? Do you throw them around carelessly, without a thought to what they will create? Or do you recognize their power, and use them accordingly?
Just as God looked around at each thing His words created and then declared it good, are we taking time to check what effects our words are leaving behind? And especially to make sure that they are GOOD?!
As I reflect on these questions, my hope for myself is that I will be aware of the power of my tongue, and that I will use my words to create life, hope, and peace. Both here and now, with the words I type out on my laptop; as well as in my day-to-day life, with the words I speak to my children, my husband, my coworkers, and even to myself….
I know that I still have work to do in these areas. But thankfully, life is always changing, love changes things, and I’m changing too. <3
